Graduates who want to keep going can transfer the A.A.S. directly into Dunwoody's bachelor's programs in Construction Management or Business Management & Leadership.

Certification options include EPA Section 608 through the Esco Institute, allowing universal refrigerant handling, plus OSHA 10, Minnesota's Special Engineers Boiler Operator License, Hydrocarbon Refrigerants Certification, and HVAC Excellence certifications. Lab space covers commercial equipment, including rooftop units, a chiller, a steam boiler, ice machines, and walk-in coolers and freezers, along with a residential lab full of furnaces, central air conditioners, and heat pumps, plus electrical science and installation labs.

Classes meet in the daytime only and on campus only. Cost and admission details are not stated on the program page. Recent graduates have gone to employers including General Mills, CenterPoint Energy, Honeywell International, Standard Heating & Air Conditioning, and pipefitters union locals in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

ITI Technical College has operated in Baton Rouge since 1973 and holds HVAC Excellence accreditation for its Air Conditioning & Electrical Technology Certificate, along with institutional accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges. Classes run four days per week in morning or evening sessions across six terms, 72 weeks in total, which works out to 18 months either way.

Coursework combines HVAC and electrical training: the National Electric Code, wiring methods, electrical safety and testing, plus programmable logic controllers and an introduction to PC office applications. Instruction happens in lecture and laboratory settings using actual field-grade equipment. HVAC certification exams are given during the program, and the 72.5 quarter credit hours earned apply toward the college's AOS degree in Air Conditioning, Refrigeration, & Electrical Technology.

Tuition and admission requirements are not published; admissions is a phone number and an invitation to tour the campus. Graduates must pass the EPA Section 608 exam if HVAC employment is the goal, and the school does not say whether testing happens on site. In Des Plaines, Illinois, Oakton College offers its Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Technology program with PAHRA accreditation. Students can pursue an A.A.S. degree or, if general education courses are not the goal, focus on just the HVACR courses and complete one of five certificates. Oakton does not publish a program length for either route.

The five certificates are EPA Section 608, Residential Comfort Control, Commercial Buildings Energy Systems, Residential Comfort Systems Installer, and Stationary Engineering License Preparation. Stationary engineering coursework covers how low-pressure and high-pressure steam boilers work, proper boiler operation, and feed water and water treatment. An industry advisory committee oversees the curriculum, with members from Elgin Hospital, the International Union of Operating Engineers, Cooling Equipment Service, Able Engineering, and Ferguson Heating and Cooling Supply.

Oakton says its tuition is among the lowest in the region, that 99 percent of its students graduate without debt, and that it awards $12 million in scholarships each year. Enrolment starts with an admission application. On licensure, Oakton discloses that its EPA Section 608 curriculum meets education requirements for licensure or certification in all listed states, while the Stationary Engineer certificate does not, because that licence is issued at the municipal level.
