Iowa gates its journeyperson licence behind a four-year apprenticeship registered with the US Department of Labor and credits no schooling against it, so what a program connects to matters more here than how long it takes. Scott Community College points graduates at exactly that, suggesting they build on the diploma with an apprenticeship to widen career options, growth and salary.
A state credential sits at the end of the diploma that does not wait four years. Iowa's mechanical board accepts it toward a specialty licence, the narrower tier the state issues alongside its main ones. At 39 credits the diploma is roughly twice the 20-credit certificate, and the college puts the finish line at under a year of study.
Coursework is split between lecture and lab across refrigeration fundamentals, basic electricity, trade skills and industry safety, with students manufacturing sheet metal fittings and applying the OSHA regulations the safety course covers. For anyone unwilling to enrol in college at all, the continuing education department runs a separate non-credit residential program over nine to ten weeks, covering installing and calibrating a gas-fired furnace with air conditioning.
