Iowa requires evidence of at least four years of practical experience as an apprentice, and since 1 January 2010 that experience "must be an apprenticeship training program registered by the United States department of labor office of apprenticeship". The requirement appears at both ends: an apprentice must certify they will work under a licensed journeyperson or master, and be enrolled in a registered program from the start.
