Students can leave after the first year with a one-year diploma or continue to the AAS degree at Mitchell Technical College's Heating and Cooling Technology program, which is accredited by HVAC Excellence. The college publishes a 99 percent job placement rate and a $57,050 average salary for the program, and lists careers including HVAC technician, service technician, environmental technician, and commercial refrigeration technician.
The first year covers electrical fundamentals, heating fundamentals, air conditioning and refrigeration, sheet metal work, controls and heat pumps, plus OSHA 10 construction safety and first aid, CPR, and AED training. AAS students continue through a six-credit summer internship and second-year courses in commercial refrigeration, commercial air conditioning, heat pumps and solar heating theory, schematics, planning and estimating, and DDC temperature control.
Training extends beyond mechanics, electricity, and sheet metal into energy management and environmental controls technology, including renewable resources such as geothermal and solar. One cost to plan for: the program requires a laptop purchased from Mitchell Tech, averaging about $1,150, loaded with the required software and serviced free by the college's technology office. Lab time goes to installing and servicing heating and cooling systems and forming sheet metal ductwork patterns.
