Getting an HVAC license in Kentucky takes two years of qualifying experience for the master contractor license, not the four years often quoted elsewhere. The statute gives three routes, each of two years: employed as a journeyman under the direction and supervision of a master, working as a master contractor or the equivalent in Kentucky or another jurisdiction, or licensed and employed as a mechanical engineer. That last route involves no trade time at all.

The regulation defines what a year means, and the number is lower than people assume. One year of HVAC experience consists minimally of 1,500 hours of HVAC work in a continuous twelve-month period, so two years is 3,000 hours rather than the 4,000 that a 2,000-hour year would give. Proof can be W-2s, an affidavit from the supervising master, an out-of-state licence, verifiable documentation from elsewhere, or a DD-214.

The journeyman licence is also two years, gained either under a master's direction or as documented HVAC work in Kentucky or elsewhere. Both tiers require you to be at least 18 and pass an exam at 70 percent, and the score stays valid for three years. One efficiency worth knowing: a passing master exam satisfies the journeyman exam requirement, so a candidate can sit one paper and hold both credentials as experience accrues.

A Kentucky HVAC license costs $250 a year for the master, plus a $150 exam fee, and $50 a year for the journeyman, plus a $50 exam fee. Masters carry general liability insurance of not less than $500,000 and property damage cover of not less than $300,000. Journeymen carry neither insurance nor a bond, and there is no bond requirement at either tier.

Apprentices pay nothing at all. The statute is explicit that apprentices and pre-apprentices shall not be required to pay a fee to obtain a certificate of registration or to renew one. Registration takes a form, a recent passport photo and the supervising master's signature and licence number, and that is the whole cost of entering the trade legally in Kentucky.

Licences renew annually by the last day of your birth month, with six hours of approved continuing education completed in the twelve months before renewal. Course content must relate to business, job safety, codes relating to HVAC, or subject matter directly relating to the trade. A licence not renewed on time expires immediately, though late filing is accepted for 60 days with a restoration fee.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics counted 5,100 HVAC technician jobs in the state in its May 2025 wage survey, a moderate workforce for a state with genuine winters and a substantial manufacturing base.
