Greenville Technical College
Greenville, SC · Post Secondary
One of only two HVAC/R programs in South Carolina accredited by HVAC Excellence, Greenville Technical College's program offers two certificates in applied science: Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Technician and Beginning Electricity and Refrigeration. All classes run days or evenings, since many students work while enrolled, and some options can be completed in less than a year.
The Air Conditioning/Refrigeration Technician certificate covers installing and servicing air conditioning, heat pumps, gas, oil, and electric heating, plus commercial refrigeration, and each student must pass one industry competency exam: residential air conditioning and heating, light commercial, or commercial refrigeration. Training uses working equipment, including a commercial refrigeration lab with display cases, R22 and R410A heat pumps, two-stage high-efficiency heat pumps and gas furnaces, and a grocery-store style compressor rack.
Graduates test for EPA technician certification and the Industry Competence Exam, and the college reports a high pass rate on both; certification for the R410A refrigerant is also available. Students in qualifying programs may have tuition, fees, and books covered by the Career Pathways Scholarship. The college itself is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.
