Which South Carolina HVAC licence you need depends on the size of the equipment and the value of the work. The Residential Builders Commission licenses a Residential HVAC Installer and Repairer, required once a residential undertaking exceeds $500. That classification is capped at five tons of cooling and 175,000 BTU per hour of heating per unit, and it excludes LP gas piping.

Above those capacities, or on commercial work, the Contractor's Licensing Board takes over. A mechanical contractor licence is required once total construction cost exceeds $10,000, a threshold raised from $5,000 in May 2023 that older guidance still gets wrong. The mechanical licence carries subclassifications, each with its own technical exam: air conditioning, heating, packaged equipment, refrigeration, plumbing, process and pressure piping, electrical and lightning protection.

Neither is a technician licence. Both attach to the contracting entity through a qualifying party, so an employee working for a licensed company needs nothing personal from the state. One limit worth planning around on the residential side: a residential specialty contractor may hold no more than three classifications, and going beyond three means examining and licensing as a residential builder instead.
